specialty spaces.

The addition of dedicated specialty spaces provides a variety of educational benefits, including:

  • Fostering creativity and problem-solving skills: Our new dedicated specialty spaces allow scholars to hone their creativity and problem-solving abilities, explore new ideas, test hypotheses, and find solutions to challenges.

  • Building soft skills: Such spaces are often collaborative environments where scholars work together on projects and share ideas. Soft skills have become essential across industries, levels, and work environments and require practice and intentionality.

  • Providing access to new technologies and tools: Our specialty spaces provide various tools and equipment that scholars may need access to elsewhere. This can allow scholars to use these technologies and gain valuable skills that can be applied in various settings.

  • Promoting a love of learning: In line with the mission of our school, these spaces create the opportunity to develop a passion for learning and exploring new ideas. By providing a fun and engaging environment where individuals can work on their own projects and learn from others, our lab spaces can foster a love of learning that can last a lifetime.

Maker Space

Our Maker Space is a lab and shop area dedicated to hands-on inquiry, investigation, and production. Maker Spaces allow our scholars to learn by doing. By working on real-world projects in a hands-on environment, scholars learn by trial and error, experimentation, and iteration.

Scholars may be found:

  1. Designing and building prototypes of products or structures using 3D printing, laser cutting, or other rapid prototyping tools.

  2. Creating digital media such as videos, animations, or websites using computers and software like Photoshop, Scratch, Blender, and more.

  3. Developing and programming robots or other electronic devices using microcontrollers and programming languages like Arduino or Python.

  4. Experimenting with new technologies such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence, or internet of things (IoT) devices.

  5. Modifying existing products, such as cars, tools, or electronic devices.

  6. Collaborating on group production using project management software and online collaboration platforms.

  7. Participating in white hat hacking or hackathons.

  8. Acquiring new skills such as soldering, metalworking, and coding.

  9. Sharing creations with the community through demonstrations, exhibitions, or other public events.

Our new Black Box Theater is a performing arts space designed to be flexible and adaptable. This ample, open space with black walls and no fixed seating or stage the theater will allow for the incorporation of unconventional work, unique techniques, productions, and innovative performances.

Our Black Box Theater provides a blank canvas for scholars to let their imaginations soar, explore their creativity, and experiment with different performance styles and techniques. The space's flexible nature emphasizes the performance and performers rather than extensive set design. Most importantly, our Black Box Theater provides a venue to connect the audience to the performers in an intentional and purposeful way.

STEM Lab

Our STEM laboratory is specifically designed for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics investigations and research. The lab will be equipped with a chemical fume hood, dissection supplies, dry and wet lab materials, oscillators, electromagnets, and other tools to create and observe scientific phenomena. The addition of a complete scientific lab greatly enhances exposure and experience in STEM fields for our scholars.

Scholars may be found:

  1. Engineering roller coasters, trebuchets, Rube Goldberg machines, and other mechanical structures

  2. Measuring the acceleration of an object as it moves down a ramp

  3. Determining the relationship between the resistance of a wire and its temperature

  4. Investigating the properties of waves by observing the behavior of oscillating masses on a spring

  5. Examining the properties of electricity and magnetism using specialized equipment such as generators and electromagnets

  6. Analyzing fingerprints, DNA, trace evidence such as fibers or hairs, and other types of evidence that could be found at a crime scene

  7. Conducting bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA)

  8. Recreating crime-scenes

  9. Analyzing soil properties and examining the structure and composition of the atmosphere using specialized equipment and techniques.
